Workshop Chairs

Gianmarco De Francisci Morales
Scientist at QCRI
Doha, Qatar

Bio: Gianmarco is a scientist at QCRI. Previously he worked as a Visiting Scientist at Aalto University in Helsinki, as a Research Scientist at Yahoo Labs in Barcelona, and as a Research Associate at ISTI-CNR in Pisa. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the IMT Institute for Advanced Studies of Lucca in 2012. His research focuses on scalable data mining, with an emphasis on Web mining and data-intensive scalable computing systems. He is an active member of the open source community at the Apache Software Foundation, working on the Hadoop ecosystem, a committer for the Apache Pig project, and one of the lead developers of Apache SAMOA, a platform for mining big data streams. He commonly serves on the PC of several major conferences in the area of data mining, including WSDM, KDD, CIKM, and WWW.

Luca Maria Aiello
Research Scientist at Yahoo Labs
London, UK

Bio: Luca got his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Torino, Italy in 2012 and he has been a Research Scientist at Yahoo Labs for 4 years, first in Barcelona and now in London. He conducts interdisciplinary research in social media, computational social science, and urban informatics through quantitative analysis of big data. At Yahoo he works with production teams of Flickr and Tumblr to build social recommender systems at scale. He has collaborated actively with several academic institutions worldwide. He organized the Social Informatics conference in Barcelona 2014.

Symeon Papadopoulos
Research Associate at CERTH-ITI
Thessaloniki, Greece

Bio: Symeon received a Computer and Electical Engineer degree from the Aristotle Univeristy of Thessaloniki in 2004, a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (P.D.Eng.) from the Technical University of Eindhoven in 2006, an MBA from Blekinge Institute of Technology in 2009, and defended his PhD thesis on social multimedia mining and knowledge discovery in the Informatics department of the Aristotle University in 2012. Since September 2006, he has been working as a research associate with the Information Technologies Institute (ITI), part of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), on a wide range of research areas such as information search and retrieval, social network analysis, data mining and web multimedia knowledge discovery. He has co-organized a number of workshops in the area of social media mining (ICMR SoMuS 2014, WWW SNOW 2014, ICME WeMuV 2015), the Summer School on Social Media Modeling and Search (SSMS 2012), and the 10th European Summer School on Information Retrieval (ESSIR 2015).

Haewoon KwakHaewoon
Scientist at QCRI
Doha, Qatar

Bio: Haewoon is a data scientist with a background in complex networks, and has studied online social networks for many years. He has worked with social scientists, physicists, and scientists in other fields since 2007, and such experiences have guided his multi-disciplinary approach to finding and solving complex problems. He is a lead author of “What is Twitter, a social network or news media?” (WWW’10), which has been cited more than 2,000 times. Similar to his Twitter paper, he is always exploring new areas, such as his work on YouTube and other online social networks. At QCRI, Haewoon focuses on computational social science and computational journalism. He investigates human nature through large-scale electronic traces collected from popular user services, such as Twitter, Reddit, online games, etc. Haewoon also works on news media interplay with social media and society at-large.
